Bobo’s goalscoring feat on top of the world
Bobo's 26 goals from 26 games so far puts him on a par with Robert Lewandowski and ahead of Messi, Cavani, Salah and Immobile. #Justsaying09 April 2018 | FT Editor
With his double on Sunday night in the match against Adelaide United, Sydney FC's Bobo has broken the record for the most number of goals in a single regular season for the A-League, taking his total to 26 with one game to go against arch-rival, Melbourne Victory. The previous record was held by Melbourne City's Bruno Fornaroli who scored 25 goals in 2015-16.
No other player has come near Bobo's goal scoring efforts this season with Western Sydney Wanderers Oriel Riera and Melbourne City's Ross McCormack in a distant second place with 14 goals apiece.
Bobo has scored a goal a game, making 26 appearances in 2017-18 from 25 starts. Riera has scored his 14 goals in 24 appearances, from 22 starts, while we are left to wonder what might have been if McCormack had stayed at Melbourne City. McCormack's 14 goals came from 17 appearances, including 14 starts.
The other A-League players who have reached double figures are Besart Berisha, Adrian Mierzejewski and Andrew Nabbout.
|Ross McCormack||Melbourne City||17||14||82|
|Oriel Riera||Western Sydney Wanderers||24||14||58|
|Besart Berisha||Melbourne Victory||24||13||54|
|Adrian Mierzejewski||Sydney FC||23||13||57|
|Andrew Nabbout||Newcastle Jets||22||10||45|
In any competition a goal-per-game average is not to be sneezed at. Throw-in Bobo's six assists, and it's been a stellar season for the striker from Brazil.
Notwithstanding the difference in the standard of the competitions, Bobo's goal-per-game ratio also compares favourably with other leading goalscorers in major overseas competitions.
In fact, in only one other competition, the Bundesliga, does the leading goalscorer have a 100% ratio. Just like Bobo, Robert Lewandowski has scored 26 goals in 26 games, his tally boosted recently with a hat-trick in Bayern Munich's 6-0 drubbing of Borussia Dortmund.
The leading goalscorers of the other major competitions are in the 90s, other than PSG's Edinson Cavani in Ligue 1 who, with 24 goals form 27 games, is scoring at a level of 89%.
|Bundesliga||Robert Lewandowski||Bayern Munich||26||26||100|
|La Liga||Lionel Messi||Barcelona||30||29||97|
|Serie A||Ciro Immobile||Lazio||28||27||96|
|Premier League||Mohamed Salah||Liverpool||31||29||94|
|Ligue 1||Edinson Cavani||PSG||27||24||89|
In the case of Bobo, Lewandowski, Messi and Cavani, their respective clubs are also runaway leaders in their respective competitions.
Sydney FC has wrapped-up the A-League, currently on 63 points with one game to go. Bayern Munich has similarly won the Bundesliga again, 20 points ahead of second-placed Schalke on 72 points with five games to go. Barcelona are on track to win La Liga with seven games to go and 11 points ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid. PSG are runaway winners in Ligue 1, 14 points ahead of Monaco with six games to go. Both Liverpool and Lazio are currently third in their respective competitions.
