The Matildas' Samantha Kerr is one of ten women players who have been nominated for this year's The Best FIFA Football Awards. The Awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on 23 October, and cover the period from 20 November last year to 6 August 2017.
The other players nominated are Lucy Bronze (England), Deyna Castellanos (Venezuela), Pernille Harder (Denmark), Carli Lloyd (USA), Dzenifer Marozsan (Germany), Lieke Martens (Netherlands), Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands), Wendie Renard (France) and Jodie Taylor (England). The shortlist was selected by a panel comprising Mia Hamm, Maia Jackman, Nadine Kessler, Jacqueline Shipanga, Sissi and Sun Wen.
Kerr's nomination reads:
A lethal goal-getter, Australian Sam Kerr is among the all-time leading scorers in the USA’s National Women’s Soccer League, where she currently plies her trade with New Jersey side Sky Blue FC. A senior international with the Matildas who made her debut as a 15-year-old in 2009, Kerr played an integral role in leading Australia to their first silverware in seven years. The forward finished as the leading goalscorer at the 2017 Tournament of Nations with five, as Australia saw off USA, Brazil and Japan to win the competition. Known for her speed, skill and finishing prowess, Kerr will no doubt be a key player for the Matildas in their AFC Asian Cup campaign in Jordan next year, as they look to avenge their 2014 final defeat against Japan.
The process for deciding the winners is for captains and head coaches of all national teams to decide on half of the vote. They are not permitted to vote for a player from their country. A group of more than 200 media members also vote, with their votes worth one-quarter of the result.
The remaining 25% is decided by a public fan ballot, which opens next Monday, 21 August, and closes on 7 September.
We will keep you updated on the link to vote as soon as it is known.
Cristiano Ronaldo is already a favourite to be named The Best again this year.
