FFA today announced details of the second leg of the 2018 World Cup Intercontinental play-off between Honduras and Australia.
The first leg will be played in Honduras on Friday 10 November 2017, Honduras time. Considering the Honduras time zone is 17 hours behind Australian eastern daylight saving time (AEDT), that means the away qualifier is likely to be broadcast around midday on Saturday 11 November - Remembrance Day. The match venue and kick-off time have not yet been confirmed by the Honduras Football Federation.
The second leg will be held at Stadium Australia in Sydney just four days later with an 8pm kick-off, one day short of the 12 year anniversary of the interncontinental play-off against Uruguay that ended our World Cup Finals wilderness.
If the Socceroos take a commercial flight from Honduras via the USA to return to Sydney - as has been suggested in some reports - they are unlikely to return to Australia until the morning of Monday 13 November.
“Following last week’s dramatic play-off victory over Syria it comes down to these last two matches to see who will get the final berth at the 2018 FIFA World Cup,” FFA CEO, David Gallop said in a media statement.
“There hasn’t been a more important match played in Australia since our last Intercontinental Play-off against Uruguay 12 years ago, and for all of us who were there it was truly a very special moment in Australian sporting history.”
“With a place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia at stake we’re calling on all football and sports fans to rally behind the Caltex Socceroos as they aim to qualify for their fourth successive FIFA World Cup,” concluded Gallop.
Tickets will go on sale to 'football family' members from 12 noon AEDT on Monday 16 October, with others able to purchase tickets from Thursday. Tickets can be purchased via www.socceroos.com.au/tickets. Both matches will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS and the Nine Network.
UPDATE: The Honduras Football Federation announced on 18 October that the first leg will be played at 4pm local time on Friday 10 November which is 9am AEDT on Saturday 11 November.
