The 2018-19 A-League season will be the 42nd renewal of Australian football’s top division and the 14th since the A-League commenced in 2005. Friday 19 October has been decided as the date the latest campaign will begin but punters eager to get in early and secure the value can have their say on the winner thanks to the ante-post market.
Traders at bet365 have had their say and remain one of the first firms with prices available to backers, setting them apart from the competition. Looking through the latest football betting, you’ll find Sydney FC marked up as favourites and although they dominate the pack at the time of writing, there’s plenty to get excited about for those looking further down the pecking order in search of a lively outsider with a big price attached.
Here’s a look at the jolly and why oddsmakers are so keen to keep them close.
It’s not difficult to see why the Sky Blues are the favourites. They have won the Australian top-tier title three times and have finished runners-up another twice, claiming second spot in 2006 and 2015. What’s worth noting about their achievements is that the club currently managed by Steve Corica have triumphed in each of the last two seasons. Will they land three in a row? 7/2 says they will, but some firms are as tight as 5/4 on the same outcome.
Sydney finished the regular season a full 14 points better than nearest rivals Newcastle Jets after 27 matches, with a record of 20 wins, four draws and only three defeats. They scored no less than 64 goals and leaked only 22 on-route to qualifying for the AFC Champions League group stage and Finals series.
It was a glorious campaign, but the team based at Sydney Football Stadium refuse to sit back and congratulate each other. Instead, the board are ploughing money into the playing staff in a bid to kick-on and continue their dominance. CEO Danny Townsend confirmed as much to fans when speaking to the media recently, informing journalists he’s chasing a marquee signing and has a few big names on his radar, including former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.
That particular piece of business fell through in the end with the Spanish scoring sensation deciding to instead join J-League outfit Sagan Tosu but the fact Sydney are chasing and being mentioned in the same sentences as players like Torres gives a feel for their ambition. Fans will take great interest over the close-season on who the blockbuster name will be.
A number of players have left the club already this year, including Jordy Buijs, Adrian Mierzejewski and Bobo, freeing up wages on the budget and paving the way for the arrival of more foreigners. Recruiting the right player won’t simply be a matter of spending big, however, according to Townsend, who is also on the lookout for a man who can adapt quickly to the Sydney lifestyle.
They may have missed out on Fernando Torres but chasing a player of that calibre has certainly caught the attention of planet football and there will be many with a close eye on developments before the restart.
