Elise KK hits a ton, while Newcastle Jets dismiss funding cut rumours10 October 2018 | FT Editor
Congratulations to Elise Kellond-Knight (pictured) on her 100th game for Australia, played this morning v England for a 1-1 draw.
Goalscorers were Fran Kirby for England in the 21st minute and the equaliser to Clare Polkinghorne in the 84th minute, with the assist by Kellond-Knight. England had 64% of possession and 16 shots on goal, compared with Australia's nine.
Newcastle Jets CEO, holidaying in Germany, says he is “riled at rumours” arising from the story in yesterday's Australian that the club is facing budget cuts because owner, Martin Lee, is feeling the heat from Donald Trump's tariff cuts affecting China. McKinna says the club is operating as normal and they have a bigger budget, and have increased their full-time non-playing football staff.
In the face of McKinna's adamant denial, could the original story (from yesterday) have been floated as a means of casting doubt on the bid of Southern Expansion, which is also backed by Chinese interests?
The rumour is that the new A-League franchises will go to one of the Melbourne teams (favoured is Team XI) and, contrary to our thoughts, Canberra. Allegedly, (a) Western Sydney Wanderers and (b) Sydney FC have made it clear to FFA that they don't want a third team based in (a) south-west Sydney for at least 12 months after they move into their newly rebuilt stadium, and (b) southern Sydney ever. This leaves Canberra - previously ranked at number 3 or 4 on the list of bidders - moving up the list.
FFA Cup Final
The FFA Cup Final in Adelaide on Tuesday 30 October is expected to be a sell-out at the charming Coopers Stadium.
Western Sydney Wanderers
With less-than-impressive form so far, Western Sydney Wanderers are keen to welcome back four injured players for their final pre-season training game, this one against Melbourne City on Friday. Mark Bridge and Vedran Janjetovic are expected to play a part, as well as new signings Ruon Tongyik and Bruce Kamau.
Former Golden Boot winner Michelle Heyman may have parted ways with Canberra United, but they're giving a player from the Gold Coast a chance to shine. 23-year-old Meaghan McElligott scored 50 goals in 26 games in the most recent WNPL season in Brisbane.
From yesterday but in today's papers
- Sam Kerr is in line for the first women's Ballon d'Or. She is one of 15 female and 30 male nominees for the two awards as we reported here.
- Aaron Mooy is out of the Socceroos training camp and the friendly match v Kuwait, his place taken by Kenneth Dougall of Barnesly.
